Report on the One-Day Workshop on “Legal Literacy”
A One-Day Workshop on “Legal Literacy” was organized by the Equal Opportunity Cell, in collaboration with the SC/ST Cell and IQAC, at MDKG College on 14th October 2025. The event was held in the Conference Hall, Arts Block of the institution. A large number of students from various disciplines actively participated in the workshop.
The inaugural speech was delivered by Mr. Aniruddha Dutta, Vice Principal of MDKG College. In his address, Mr. Dutta emphasized the need, necessity, and holistic approach to legal education. He further spoke about the importance of knowledge assimilation and how the younger generation should effectively incorporate new information.
The workshop was compered by Ms. Manisha Rudra Tariang, Coordinator of the Equal Opportunity Cell. In her welcome address, Ms. Tariang highlighted how the Equal Opportunity Cell, in accordance with UGC inclusivity guidelines and constitutional provisions, promotes diversity and accessibility. She emphasized that all students, faculty, and non-teaching staff should receive fair and equal treatment and opportunities. Ms. Tariang also underscored the significance of legal literacy in raising awareness and strengthening the effectiveness of legal aid related mechanisms.
The resource persons for the workshop were Dr. Anita Sharma and Ms. Uzma A. Rahman, faculty members from the Department of Political Science, MDKG College.
Dr. Sharma delivered an insightful presentation highlighting key concepts such as equality before law and reservations. She discussed the challenges of systemic discrimination and the exploitation of human rights. Dr. Sharma also referred to the important constitutional and legal documents, including the Indian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and the protection of human rights for all.
Ms. Uzma A. Rahman, in her presentation, explored the critical role of legal literacy in promoting justice, equality, and social empowerment. She discussed the role of the Indian Constitution and the key statutory laws in ensuring justice, explaining complex legal concepts with great clarity. Ms. Rahman elaborated on important legislations such as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, Domestic Violence Act, and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Two student speakers, Ms. Sanjiwani Phukon and Ms. Muskan Phukon, from the Department of Political Science, also shared their perspectives on the importance of legal literacy.
The workshop was graced by Dr. Ashwini Machey, IQAC Coordinator, and Dr. Jogesh Das, Department of Political Science, MDKG College, who extended their support during the certificate distribution.
