The Department of Philosophy, MDKG College, successfully organized the vibrant event “Bihu Open Mic: Celebrating Ethnicity, Identity and Culture” on 4th April 2026, with the aim of promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Assam while fostering respect for ethnic identity and collective ethos as envisioned by UGC. A key objective of the programme was to inspire students to understand how creative expressions of culture can contribute to the growth of the Orange Economy in the journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. The program started by few words by Dr.Rupali Majumder,HoD of the department of philosophy and the event was inaugurated by Dr. Mitali Sonowal, a distinguished Bor Bihuati and accomplished performer of Dhol, Bahi, and Pepa. The programme began with a heartfelt tribute to multi genius cultural icon and heart throb of people of Assam, Zubeen Garg, followed by a captivating solo Bihu dance by our student, Gitanjali Dutta. Students enthusiastically showcased their talents through group and solo Bihu dances, Bihu songs, traditional food presentations, and self-composed poems in Assamese and Hindi language. A special highlight was a beautiful self-composed poem ‘Basanta’ recited by Puspa Gaonkhowa, faculty member of the department of Sanskrit, reflecting the spirit of spring and the arrival of Bihu. Rukhsar Khatoon (student) also moved the audience with her self -composed Hindi poem ‘Bihu’. The presence and inspiring words of esteemed faculty members, along with Dr. Ashwini Machey, Coordinator of IQAC, who spoke on the significance of the Orange Economy, enriched the programme. Traditional delicacies like Til Pitha and Gheela Pitha added cultural flavour to the celebration. The ‘Bihu Open Mic’, event was a resounding success, marked by enthusiastic spot participation from students, reflecting spontaneity, creativity and vibrant cultural expression. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by the HoD of Philosophy, Dr. Rupali Majumder, marking a memorable celebration of culture, creativity, and community spirit.
