“CLIMATE ACTION: OUR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES”

The Department of Geography and IQAC, MDKG College observed the International Day of Climate Change on 24th October 2025 by organising a talk which was delivered by Dr. Binita Pathak, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and Adjunct Faculty of Centre of Atmospheric Studies, Dibrugarh University. The topic of the talk was ” Climate Action: Our Roles and Responsibilities”.
Dr. M. Bagchi, Head of the Department of Geography of the college welcomed the audience and stated the objective of the programme. Dr. Anup Jyoti Bharali Principal of the college in his Inaugural Speech stressed the importance of climate change and the effects thereof.
Dr. Binita Pathak in her enlightening and vibrant discourse dwelt on the aspects of the climate, causes of climate change, scenario of global carbon dioxide increase and its negative effects. She said that the Greenhouse Effect is vital in raising the global temperature and mentioned the reasons, the contributing countries and ways to diminish the emission of GHGs. She said that a small step in the individual level will go a long way in curbing the global temperature increase.She highlighted the climate change in North East India, lengthening of summers, harsh winters, extreme climatic events, etc. She deliberated on evidence and impacts of climate change on the Anthropocene. She discussed the various phases of climate action starting from Montreal Protocol, Sustainable Development period with special reference to SDG 13 i .e. Climate Action.She said that the IPCC is working on Climate Action by studying the causes, impacts, community and organisational level contribution to combat climate change. The main objective of climate action is resilience and adaptability. She mentioned the policies adopted in order to curb climate change like adopting Green Diwali, raising the level of education and awareness, and especially the adaption and mitigation measures. Her illuminative lecture was replete with local examples.
The talk was attended by around 85 students and a good number of faculties of the college.
Faculties like Dr. Juli Konwar, Dr. Rupali Majumdar, Shrutimala Bharali, Dipankar Sarmah, Nilufer Rahman, Sukanya K Chaliha of other departments and Sangita Gogoi and Kaberi Hazarika of Geography department were present and shared their views on the topic.
Students of the department like Disha, Namrata, Nayani, Kasturika, Mallika and Kongkona shared their opinion about the topic and thanked the resource person for such a vibrant and lucid lecture.
