About the Department:

“Education is the manifestation of perfection already existing in man”

Department of Education is one of the leading departments of the college. It has achieved many milestones from time to time. Since the inception of the college in 1963, the Department of Education has also been started. The Department has witnessed consistent improvement in the performances of its academic and placement records. The Department of Education is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and promoting equitable learning opportunities for all students. It is committed to create an inclusive environment that values diversity and ensures inclusion of diverse population of students. The department aims to prepare future educators to equip with the skills and knowledge necessary to inspire and lead in diverse educational settings. It offers program designed to prepare students for various teaching roles, emphasizing both theoretical foundations and practical applications. The students are encouraged to get hands on experience to develop their skills of teaching through psychological laboratory practical and practice teaching. The field-based project study also gives opportunity to the students for community participation to address the challenges faced by the community. The teachers of the department are dedicated to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a passion for lifelong learning among the students. The teachers also encourage the students to take active participation in different extracurricular activities and to get religiously involved in whatever they do for the good of the society and themselves.

Psychological Laboratory Practical

The Psychological Laboratory practical of Education Department serves as a critical resource for students to explore and understand psychological principles and their application in educational settings. The Department is equipped with a variety of apparatus and tools such as Memory Drum, Tachistoscope, Maze Learning, Thematic Apperception Test cards, Rorschach Ink Blot Test cards, Mirror Drawing Apparatus, etc, that facilitate hands on experiments in areas such as personality, memory, intelligence, learning, and attention. This experiential learning environment not only deepens students’ theoretical knowledge but also prepares them to apply psychological principles effectively in their future educational prospects.

Practice Teaching

The Practice Teaching is a vital component included in the syllabus of Education, since it gives students hands-on experience in real-world classroom situations. This curriculum connects theory and practice of teaching, enabling students to apply pedagogical principles that are taught throughout their course. Students learn critical skills in lesson plans, classroom management, and student engagement. The practicum not only improves teaching skills, but it also encourages reflective practice, allowing students to identify their strengths and areas of improvement.

Departmental Library

The Departmental Library of Education Department having a capacity of 600 approx books serves as a vital resource hub for students and faculty members within the department. It offers a specialized collection of books and research papers ensuring that users have access to both foundational and advanced materials relevant to the specific field of study. The students are also allowed to issue the library books for a stipulated time. The departmental library plays a crucial role in fostering intellectual growth, and supporting the academic endeavours of its users.

DEPARTMENTAL WALL MAGAZINE:

The Departmental Wall Magazine, namely: ‘RAINBOW’ created by students, is a dynamic exhibition of creativity and expertise within academia. It includes a variety of essays, artworks, and student contributions that highlight ongoing initiatives. The wall magazine is prepared on a specific theme every year. This joint endeavour not only improves students’ literary and visual talents, but it also fosters a sense of belonging and pride in the department. The wall magazine serves as a forum for discussion, enabling students to voice their thoughts and viewpoints, thereby improving the educational experience and fostering a culture of involvement and creativity.

Message from the HOD

Welcome to the Department of Education. The Department was established in the year 1963 with some of our eminent teachers and currently has four permanent faculty members rendering teaching for Under – Graduate courses. The Department of Education is one of the vital departments of the college that plays a crucial role in preparing future educators and leaders in the field of education. The department aims to equip students with the necessary skills, knowledge and practical experience to become effective educators in educational settings. We also emphasise the importance of equity and diversity in education, preparing to address the needs of diverse student populations and create a positive learning environment. Through a combination of academic rigor, hands on psychological experiments, teaching experiences, field study and add on course, and a focus on contemporary educational challenges, the department strive to contribute to the continuous improvement of the students. By embracing diversity and promoting lifelong learning, we aim to prepare students not only for academic success but also for their roles as responsible, skilled and engaged citizens in a rapidly changing world.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES:

Extension Activities:

1. Activity: Students Project work cum Extension activity
    Date: 2nd April, 2023
    Venue: ‘Vidya: The Living School’, Subahi, Dhemaji

  • For the purpose of Project work, Paper DSEED: 604 of B.A 6th Semester (Education Hons), the area of study was selected at ‘Vidya: The Living School’, Subahi, Dhemaji. The visit for the project work was conducted on 2nd April, 2023. The area of the study covered the following aspects: (i) Curriculum of the school (ii) Textbooks of the school (iii) Management of the school (iv) Method of teaching of the school (v) Admission system of the school (vi) Residential aspects of the school and (vii) Livelihood skill teaching.
  • An Extension Activity on the theme: (i) Basic tips and techniques on Disaster management and (ii) Plantation drive was undertaken by the Department of Education, MDKG College on 2nd April, 2023 at ‘Vidya: The Living School’, Subahi, Dhemaji. Students of the department have demonstrated on tips for flood, earthquake, CPR demo, use of First-aid etc. the demonstration was conducted among the students of the school. School students’ involvement was seen during the extension activity. Moreover, for the fulfillment of the second activity, i.e. Plantation, 03 Saplings were donated to the school.

2. Activity: An Extension activity on ‘Awareness on Substance Abuse’
     Date: 12th May, 2023
     Venue: Naliapool Bengali High School

  • An Extension programme on “Awareness on Substance Abuse” was organized by the Department of Education, MDKG College, Dibrugarh at Naliapool Bengali High School, Dibrugarh, Assam on 12th May, 2023. All the Faculties of the Department of Education and 8 student representatives of the Department of Education had initiated the programme.
  • The programme was started with an introductory speech by Dr. Indrani Sen Gupta regarding a brief description about the awareness on substance abuse.
  • The awareness programme highlighted the different aspects on substance abuse which was portrayed with a ‘Skit’ and ‘Poster Presentation’ by the students of the department. The awareness theme included topics on: What is substance abuse; Its Symptoms, causes, effects and solution; Role of the Parents and Educational institutions. Moreover, a Chart prepared by the students of the department on some important days related to substance abuse was also submitted to the School for creating awareness among the students. Further, an Oath was also taken by the students saying ‘No to Drugs’.
  • The Programme was attended by the Headmistress and 7 Teachers of the School. Moreover, a total number of 115 Students from Class VI to X attended the Programme.
  • Feedback about the programme has also been submitted by the Headmistress and the Students of the School, and they thanked us for such an initiative.

GLIMPSES OF THE PROGRAMME

Extension activity on ‘Awareness on Substance Abuse’

Workshops and Visits:

1. Activity Topic: Orientation cum workshop on programme on ‘Spoken English and Personality Development’
    Date: 29th September, 2018
    Venue: Department of Education

An orientation cum workshop programme on ‘Spoken English and Personality Development’ for One week was held in Department of Education for the students of the Education Department on 29th September, 2018. Ms. Preeti Basumatary was invited as the Resource Person to conduct the orientation programme. In her speech she talked about the importance of Foreign language as well as modern Indian language in career development, personality development, interview etc. she also said that it is a very good opportunity to learn foreign language as a career choice because it helps to get a good job placement in aviation company, MNC, Air hostess, translators etc.
The orientation programme ended with a brief speech from the teachers and students of the department and accepting the fact that learning and communicating in different languages, especially English helps in reducing misunderstandings, misinformation and communication gaps. As a whole, the program benefitted the students. Moreover, during the workshop, students learned about prepositions, synonyms, articles and also communication skills too.

2. Activity: Visit cum orientation to Dibrugarh University Central Library regarding its facilities and visit to the Anthropology museum of DU
    Date: 18th November, 2021
    Venue: Dibrugarh University Central Library

  • The Department of Education, MDKG College organized a departmental activity regarding library visit and orientation programme to Dibrugarh University among the B.A 5th Sem, Education (Honours) students on 18th November, 2021. The students were oriented regarding the “Lakminath Bezbaroa Central library of Dibrugarh University”. The Deputy Librarian of LNB Central library Dr. Utpal Das along with Sri. Hemanta Barman have elaborately oriented the students on the facilities and the use as well as availability of the database and gave various information on books/journals/newspapers etc available in the library. The students were very much benefitted regarding the library use and its contents. They were also oriented regarding the Library course as well.
  • Moreover, a visit to the “Anthropology Museum of Indigenous people of D.U” was also visited by the students. The Curator of the museum, Dr. Tara Nath Dowerah conducted a session on the treasures kept on the museum with its relevance and importance. It consists of variety of collections such as monuments, scripts, dress code, utensils depicting various ethnic culture and traditions from the ancient period till date.
  • Along with this visit, “Malbhog Baruah Sangrahalay” museum was also explored by the students and the teachers. The museum treasured numerous collections and history of Lakminath Bezboroa, Hanuman Bax Surajamal Kanoi, Manohari Devi Kanoi etc. It also includes Third generation computer, old versions of radio, television, coins, printers, recorders etc. Further, it also includes the culture of Assam depicting its heritage, and also showcases the “Mukhas” for Mukha Bhawna from Majuli.
  • The students were mesmerized by the traditions, history and the contents included and treasured inside the museum.
  • Thus, the visit to DU on 18th November, 2021 was beneficial for the students as well as the teacher’s in-charge of the event.

3. Activity: One day Workshop on ‘Lesson Plan Preparation’
    Date: 23rd May, 2022
    Venue: Room No. 01, Conference Room (Arts Campus, M.D.K.G College)

A one day workshop on Lesson Plan Preparation has been organized by the Department of Education in collaboration with IQAC of MDKG College on 23rd May, 2022 at Room No.01 Conference Room (Arts Campus, M.D.K.G College). Resource Person, Dr. Pranjal Buragohain, Department of Education, Dibrugarh University, Assam has been invited to conduct the session. A total of 55 Teacher-Partcipants of the College participated the Workshop.
        The workshop highlighted the following aspects: (i) Preparation of Lesson Plan (ii) Importance of Lesson Plan (iii) Preparation of behavioural objectives and (iv) Examples related to Bloom’s Taxonomy

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE FIELD STUDY

In BA 6th Semester Education (Major), Research Project is a major paper 602 of 40 marks. Based upon this unit, the Department assigned topics on: (i) A Study on health awareness and health conditions of Bamunia Hiloidhari Gaon of Dibrugarh District, Assam (ii) A study on the condition of Secondary Education of Phulampur village (iii) A study on the Secondary education of women in Rongchongi Gaon (iv) A study on different schemes provided by Government in the village of Jokai area. A total number of 27 students of 6th semester, 2018-19 session were assigned to collect data on the above mentioned topics. All the 27 students submitted their report to the department.

1. Activity: Laboratory Practical Sharing Programme
    Date: 18th and 19th January, 2021
    Venue: Education Laboratory Class
Laboratory Practical Sharing programme was held on 18th & 19th Januray, 2021 in Education Department, MDKG College. The Laboratory Practical Sharing programme was done with the students of Indreswar Sarma Academy, Dibrugarh. Teacher, Mrs. Jayashree Baruah and 03 Students (Praituch Kabir Gogoi, Monita Doley and Pratibha guha Mazumder) of Indreswar Sarma Academy, Dibrugarh has attended the Education Department, MDKG College for Laboratory Practical. Educational Psychological Experiments were conducted with the laboratory apparatus available in the Education Department, MDKG College. Dr. Indrani Sen Gupta (HoD, dept. of Education, MDKG College) has also oriented the students about the uses and conduct of Psychological practical. The students learned the practicals and conducted the practicals with their respective ‘Subjects’. Students of MDKG college also initiated them by representing them as ‘Subjects’. Overall, it was a good educational venture for both the Colleges.

    Target Group: Students of Department of Education, MDKG College
An interactive session on ‘Beauty and Wellness’ was organized by Dept. of Education among the students. Invited resource person Mrs. Bibha Neog, (Alumni of the Department, Centre manager at Nykaa Guwahati centre) have conducted the session and highlighted the opportunities related to beauty and wellness sector which is one of the booming career. She also spoke on lucrative offers related to the career opportunities on beauty and wellness. She also assured the students audience for various support if required. Further, she also mentioned about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) training programs and different vocational training programmes for the beauty and wellness sector for providing learning and earning opportunities.

On behalf of the Department of Education, MDKG College, a lecture session/class for the B.A 4th Semester, Education (Minor), students on the topic: ‘Cost of Education’, on 6th April, 2024 at 01:00 p.m. respectively. The class was taken by the invited lecturer, Ms. Anwesha Saikia of Department of Economics, MDKG College, Dibrugarh. The class covered the following topics: (i) Concept and nature of Educational Cost (ii) meaning and nature of different types of Educational cost: Direct cost, Indirect cost, Money cost, social cost, institutional cost, private cost (iii) Opportunity cost: meaning and its application in education (iv) meaning and use of unit cost of education in educational planning (v) calculation of unit cost of education and (vi) concept of cost efficiency and cost effectiveness in education.

A lecture cum Interactive session on “Happiness Strategy on Good relationships, Health and Success” was organized by the Department of Education on 7th Oct, 2024 at Room No.01 from 12:00 Noon at MDKG College. Resource Person, Prof. Rajesh K Pillania (Asia Fellow, Harvard University & Professor of Strategy at the Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon and an Honorary Chairman of the Happiness Strategy Foundation) leading researcher and trainer on happiness in India, popularly called India’s Happiness Professor or India’s Happiness Guru was invited for the session. He focused on different happiness strategy, and has emphasized and enlightened the importance of cultivating happiness in our lives. The Content of the Happiness Strategy Session focused on “Why do we need happiness, What is happiness, and How to be happy”. The focus is on the application part and making happiness a part of daily life. We are more productive when we are happier which also indicates positivity in our relationships, health as well as our work. He also emphasized on defining happiness as: to enjoy life, have purpose in life, and also extending help i.e. social service. Moreover, to have a right balance. Further, he also deeply stressed on valuing time and having purpose in life.
